STATISTICS:
A recent Point In Time Count Comparison, which was facilitated by the Macomb County Continuum of Care in January of 2011 indicated that there were 1101 homeless, individuals and families in Macomb County. According to the Macomb Homeless Coalition, this number is believed to be an undercount. Many families go without; hungry and unaccounted for.
Macomb County is located 8 miles east of the City of Detroit and both cities were listed in HUD’s publication of distressed cities.
Mount Clemens has distinct areas with up to 31% of families living in poverty, nearly 68% households have only a single parent, and close to a majority of residents do not have a high school diploma. Incarceration rates are high.
The result indicates children and youth with poorer health and dental care, as well as substandard prenatal care in pregnant teens. Additionally, statistics indicate that persons in poverty have inferior nutrition resulting in obesity and malnutrition.
In response to this crisis in 2008 through 2010, by faith, Providence Ministries served the city of Mount Clemens and surrounding cities in the following ways:
- Served more than 30,000 nutritious meals
· Provided clothing to more than 1500 families
· Facilitated over 200 weeks(600 hours) of spiritual counsel & support groups for men, women, youth and families of the incarcerated,
·Provided support for more than 100 teen mothers
·Provided Christmas presents for Children with Incarcerated parents
·Provided thousands of information referrals for state and federal benefits
·Documented 100 volunteers providing 21,515 volunteer hours, valued at $219,022
